Design Guidance

Edge Lane Roads are an easy concept to grasp. But some details are challenging given the facility's novel approach of allowing two-way vehicular traffic to share a travel lane. High-level design guidance is provided by the FHWA Small Town and Rural Multimodal Networks guide but this document ignores decades and thousands of road-kilometers of experience gained in other countries.

This design guide goes beyond these two sources and includes research findings from other countries which have far more experience with this road format than exists in North America. It can be downloaded below.
